08 Mar Empowering Physically Challenged Innovators: The Yamoransa Model Labs Initiative
In a world where access to education and innovation often eludes those with physical challenges, the Yamoransa Model Labs (YM Labs) are rewriting this narrative, one invention at a time.
Funded by the Helping Africa Foundation (HAF) and managed by Implementers, the recent Annual Impact Roundtable and Robotics Competition held in Accra from February 26-28, 2024, spotlighted the remarkable contributions of students like Mawuli Nutsugah and Thomas Djabatey from the Kibi School for the Deaf. These two trailblazers exemplify the transformative power of the YM Labs program. Through their ingenuity and perseverance, they are not only shaping their own destinies but also paving the way for millions of physically challenged individuals across Ghana and Africa. At the heart of their endeavor lies a profound sense of purpose-to create innovations that enhance the lives of others.
At the Annual Impact Roundtable, Mawuli and Thomas unveiled their groundbreaking creation: a smart periodic table of elements designed to facilitate STEAM education for the physically challenged. Their vision extends beyond the confines of their own challenges; they believe in inclusivity and the fundamental right of every individual to access cutting-edge knowledge and technology.
Reflecting on the impact of the YM Labs program, Mawuli shares, “The transformation in our lives is nothing short of miraculous. From limited opportunities to now being equipped with knowledge in information technology, science, and robotics, we feel empowered to contribute meaningfully to society.”
The story of Kibi is a testament to the profound impact of the YM Labs Initiative. Since its inception in 2016, the project has erected 14 labs across Ghana and the Gambia, touching the lives of over 35,000 children in 2023 alone. Kafui Prebbie, CEO of Implementers and Techaide, acknowledges the unexpected scale of this impact, expressing pride in the program’s ability to transcend boundaries and empower the marginalized.
Looking ahead, the vision extends beyond Ghana’s borders, with plans to expand the initiative across Africa, thanks to the unwavering support of the Helping Africa Foundation. The journey towards inclusive education and innovation is ongoing, but with champions like Mawuli and Thomas leading the charge, the future is brighter than ever for individuals with physical challenges in Africa and beyond.
